Parish Priest Peter Gebara (SCJ)
Our parish priest, Father Peter Gebara, was born on the 10th of May in 1958, in Chorzów, located in Silesia in south-west Poland. He is the sixth child in a family of ten children. Father Peter attended grammar school and high school in his hometown after which he began his noviciate in the religious community of priests and brothers of the sacred heart of Jesus (SCJ) in Pliszczyn near Lublin.
After one year as a novice he continued to study philosophy and theology at Stadniki near Kraków. He received his master’s degree in moral theology. He was ordained in June 1986. His first parish was the parish of Węglówka in the mountain region of southern Poland. From there he was transferred to the parish of Chmielów in central Poland. As a priest he has mainly worked with children and adolescents.
Father Peter arrived in Finland on 21.7.1991. He started as an assistant priest at Holy Cross Parish in Tampere where he also started his studies in the Finnish language and became acquainted with the Finnish culture and society. After a short period of time father Peter became a parish priest of the wide-spread Holy Cross parish. He was assigned by the bishop to be the parish priest of the St. Bridget and Blessed Hemming parish in Turku on the 1st of January in 2003. Father Peter is known as an engaged, active, energetic and cheerful priest.
